This short par four offers a good chance for a birdie as long as care is taken on the tee shot to avoid the fairway bunker on the right side of the fairway. Play the tee shot to the left half of the fairway for the best angle of approach to the putting surface. A well executed pitch is necessary to get the ball close to the hole on this small putting surface.

Course Layout

Hole Number One, Maple, Par 5 Rear Tees 485 yards, Middle Tees 470 yards, Forward Tees 435 yards The Tee shot should be played over or around the tree directly in front of you.  The hole is a straight away, somewhat short, par five.  A well struck tee shot in the fairway will give the player a chance to reach this green in two shots.  For the player short of the green in two, the approach shot can be played as run-up or a high, soft pitch.  Approach shots long and left will result in difficult recovery.  The putting surface has gentle undulations and variable slopes Hole Number Two, Challenge, Par 4, Rear Tees 400 yards, Middle Tees 380 yards, Front Tees 310 yards. The second is a challenging par four in all aspects. It is imperative for the tee shot to be well struck to reach the top of the rise in the fairway for a view to the putting surface. A medium to long iron is still required to reach the well guarded putting surface. Using a lofted metal-wood for the approach may be a good choice. The best layup for the player that cannot easily reach the green in two shots is short and left of the putting surface; the shot should be played over the left fairway bunker. The two level green is very undulating and sloped. Watch out for the hidden bunker back left of the putting surface. Hole Number Three, Pastoral, Rear Tees 320 yards, Middle Tees 305 yards, Forward Tees 255 yards. This short par four offers a good chance for a birdie as long as care is taken on the tee shot to avoid the fairway bunker on the right side of the fairway. Play the tee shot to the left half of the fairway for the best angle of approach to the putting surface. A well executed pitch is necessary to get the ball close to the hole on this small putting surface. Hole Number Four, Redan Par 3 Rear Tees 230 yards Middle Tees 190 yards Forward Tees 145 yards. This hole is designed after the original Redan in North Berwick, Scotland. A right to left shot is the best manner in which to execute the tee shot. As the putting surface is blind, the mounding to the right of the front left flanking bunker is a good target at which to set up the shot; turning the ball over toward the front of the green. Any tee shot coming to rest on the putting surface should be considered a well executed effort. A tee shot left short or in the large front bunker will result in a difficult up and down. The putting surface is relatively flat but sloping. Hole Number Five Sojurn Par 4 Rear Tees 370 yards Middle Tees 345 yards Forward Tees 275 yards. Precision is required to place the tee shot in this very narrow fairway. The right edge of the fairway will result in the best angle of approach to the green. The putting surface is well guarded by a front left bunker and a right side grassy hollow requiring an accurate approach. Recovery from a missed approach will be challenging. The putting surface is gently undualting and sloping. Hole Number Six Plateau Par 3 Rear 150 yards Middle 135 yards Forward 110 yards. This is a straightforward par three. The player must choose whether to take dead aim at the hole location or play to the middle of the green. The putting surface is slightly perched above the surrounding ground. A tee shot missing the green will require a deft pitch to get the recovery shot close to the hole, especially on the short side. The green is broken into three areas with gentle contours. Hole Number Seven Narrow Par 4 Rear Tees 355 yards Middle Tees 340 yards Forward Tees 275 yards. This is a hole of natural beauty and great challenge. The tee shot is played through an alley of trees to a fairway that gently swings to the right. A tee shot played to the left side of the fairway will give the best angle of approach to the putting surface. The approach shot is played to a gently contoured putting surface over a sprawling bunker fronting the green. Distance control is paramount for the approach as the shot must land just over the bunker. Shots that go long, left or right will result in a difficult recovery. A poorly struck approach played directly to the putting surface will result in what is arguably the most difficult play in golf, the long bunker shot. Hole Number 8 Meadow Par 4 Rear Tees 280 yards Middle Tees 255 yards Forward Tees 220 yards. This hole is a welcome relief after encountering holes 4, 5, 6 and 7. The approach shot sets up the tee shot. A birdie is possible on this short par four, but the approach must be played softly through the air to the elevated putting surface. Therefore, the player must decide what distance of approach they desire and execute the corresponding tee shot distance. The right side of the fairway yields the best angle of approach to the putting surface. The putting surface is gently contoured and slightly sloped. Hole Number 9 Tobacco Par 4 Rear Tees 370 yards Middle Tees 355 yards Forward Tees 300 yards. This hole is a challenging par four that requires exacting execution to be successful.  The tee shot should be played toward the fairway bunker.  The best angle of approach to the green is from the left side of the fairway. Be aware of the out of bounds along the entire left side of the golf hole. The undulating putting surface is guarded by a front right bunker and mound, a front left grassy hollow and out of bound to the left.  The approach must be precisely struck.  A shot from the rough will most likely not have enough spin to hold the sloping putting surface.  A deft touch around and on the putting surface will be necessary to recover from a poorly played approach.  Leaving the ball short of the putting surface, in the fairway is best for a chance of recovery. The putting surface is wildly undulating and sloped. Both line and speed are important when executing any putt. Hole Number Ten Lake Par 4 Rear Tees 300 yards Middle Tees 290 yards Forward Tees 145 yards. The tee shot over the lake appears daunting at first, but a solidly struck shot will easily clear the water. The tee shot should be played to the left of the fairway bunker and toward the grassy hollow (future bunker) on the right side of the fairway. The approach’s difficulty depends upon the hole location. The back left location is the most difficult and requires great precision to land the ball on the butting surface behind the bunker. Wherever the hole is located it is best to be below the hole on this two level green. Hole Number Eleven Reversal Par 3 Rear Tees 145 yards Middle Tees 125 yards Forward Tees 100 yards. This medium length par three requires precise direction and distance control. The green is surrounded by four bunkers making recovery difficult. The putting surface has two distinct levels. It is a reverse terrace in that the front section is above the back section. For a fair chance at a birdie the player best leave the tee shot on the same level as the hole location. The front of the green is open, so the player has the option of playing a run-up or a high, soft tee shot. Hole Number Twelve Temptation Par 4 Rear Tees 265 yards Middle Tees 250 yards Forward Tees 215 yards. This short par four can be reached by the long player. But, a deep, steep faced bunker built into the front of the green precludes any but the best struck tee shot from reaching this putting surface. The best play is to place the tee shot is short and right of the putting surface toward the fairway bunker. The approach requires a lofted shot to a narrow green perched above the surrounding ground. The putting surface is relatively flat with a few very gentle contours. Hole Number Thirteen Dogleg Par 4 Rear Tees 410 yards Middle Tees 395 yards Forward Tees 325 yards. This par four requires a well struck tee shot to have a fair chance to reach the putting surface in two shots. The tee shot offers two options. It can be played over the left bunker shortening the hole, but resulting in an approach over a bunker at a less than desirable angle.  Playing the tee shot to the right will result in a longer approach but a much improved angle. A long approach will possibly find the lake, so distance control is paramount. An approach left short and right of the putting surface will allow for a fair chance at recovery. The putting surface has very gentle undulations. Hole Number Fourteen Trial Par 4 Rear Tees 440 yards Middle Tees 415 yards Forward Tees 330 yards. This is the longest, and arguably the most difficult, par four at Spring Hills. The tee shot must be struck solidly and precisely up a hill to a narrow fairway. The approach is a medium to a long iron to a sloping putting surface protected by a front right bunker. For the player that must lay up after an errant tee shot, the fairway short and left of the green will result in a fair chance for an up and down. The very deep, yawning camel’s back bunker looms between the tee shot landing area and the green and should be avoided at all costs! Hole Number Fifteen Fiddlesticks Par 4 Rear Tees 315 yards Middle Tees 300 yards Forward Tees 250 yards. This hole is one of the most picturesque at Spring Hills. The down hill tee shot is easily laid up to a wide fairway short of the slope down to the lake. The approach is downhill to a putting surface protected in front by a grassy hollow, to the right by a slope and to the left by the lake. The approach shot requires concentration and a swing resulting in a solid hit as all the trouble is laid out in front of the player in a beautiful vista. The safe play is away from the lake to the right edge of the green. This will result in a fast downhill putt. The green is gently sloping, speed control is essential. Hole Number Sixteen Calamity Par 4 Rear Tees 395 yards Middle Tees 365 yards Forward Tees 290 yards. To say that this hole demands precision is an outright understatement. The tee shot should be played to the left edge of the tree on the right side of the hole. Experience will result in the knowledge of what club to play off the tee to access the widest part of the narrow fairway. The right edge of the fairway will give the best angle of approach into the putting surface. Tee shots on the left side will encounter a severe slope below the fairway and trees between the player and the green. Safe recovery to the fairway is recommended for errant tee shots. The putting surface is protected by a rock bottomed creek on the right and a slope to the left. The green is sloped from back to front and left to right. Speed and line control is a must when striking a putt. Hole Seventeen Short Par 3 Rear Tees 155 yards Middle Tees 125 yards Forward Tees 105 yards. This slightly uphill par three plays to a putting surface that is protected by a bunker on the right. Attention should be paid to the length of the hole as it may appear shorter than it really is as front bunker is well short of the green. The safe play is to the left side away from the bunker. The green is relatively flat with very gentle slopes. Hole Eighteen Home Par 5 Rear Tees 535 yards Middle Tees 510 yards Forward Tees 430 yards. The finishing hole is an excellent par five that is up hill most of the way. A tee shot finding the fairway will be a great benefit. The second shot needs to clear the steep bunker and grassy hollow combination between the tee shot landing area and the green. An errant tee shot in the rough will result in a decision whether or not to try to clear the fairway hazards. The green is a table top perched slightly above the fairway. The player can play a run-up or lofted shot to the putting surface. Distance control is necessary as there is no slope in the putting surface to help take up the speed of a strongly struck approach. The green is very gently undulating.
